SIRONA
 
Cette déesse des eaux, qui présidait à l’abondance, est l’une des déesses gallo-romaines les plus souvent attestées, après Epona sans doute. L’épigraphie recense plus d’une douzaine de fois son nom en Allemagne, huit fois en France, deux fois en Roumanie, une fois en Suisse (Augst) à Vienne (Autriche) et à Rome où elle suit son amant Apollon. Elle est représentée avec la corde d’abondance et quelquefois un serpent thérapeutique qu’elle nourrit (piliers de Vienne-en-Val, Loiret). Et c’est une curiosité : le nom de cette déesse dont les fleuves courent les prairies signifie « étoile ». Depuis Pedersen (Vergleichende Grammatik, I, p. 78) et les travaux de Vendryès (Études celtiques, V, p. 246), il ne fait pas de doute que le nom de Sirona (et Dsirona, une fois) doit être rapproché des appellations néoceltiques de l’étoile (breton ster, cornique steyr, kymrique ser, syr).
 Il faudra supposer qu’elle est une déesse de « la rivière étoilée » et que les ruisseaux que l’on baptise de son nom sur la terre sont les images du flux nourricier de la Voie lactée.
 
Sirona est non seulement la déesse éponyme de la Sarine, un affluent de l’Aar qui prend source au col du Sanetsch, entre les cantons de Berne et du Valais (Suisse), mais aussi de cet affluent de la Promenthouse nommée Serine (district de Nyon), de la Valserine (autrefois nommée La Serine) qui afflue dans le Rhône (Ain), de La Sorne (Sorna en 690), affluent de la Birse (Jura bernois) et de quelques autres encore.

In Celtic mythology, Sirona was a goddess worshipped predominantly in East Central Gaul and along the Danubian limes. A healing deity, she was associated with healing springs; her attributes were wolves and children. She was the sometimes depicted with Apollo Grannus or Apollo Borvo. She was particularly worshipped by the Treveri in the Moselle Valley.
 
Etymology of the name
 
The name of the goddess was written in various ways: Sirona, Đirona, Thirona (Jufer & Luginbühl 2001:62-63), indicating some difficulty in capturing the initial sound in the Latin alphabet. The symbol Đ is used here to represent the Tau Gallicum, an additional letter used in Gaulish and pronounced st- or ts- (Eska 1998, Mees 2002) - it is not a form of the letter "D". The root is Gaulish *ster- (*h2ster) meaning a star (Markey 2001). The same root is found in Old Irish as ser, Welsh seren, Middle Cornish sterenn and Breton steren(n) (Delamarre 2003:282). The name Đirona combines the root *ster- with the -on- frequently, but not exclusively, found in theonyms (for example Epona, Matrona) and the usual Gaulish feminine singular -a (Hamp 1994).
