St Dogwells
dedicated to St Dogfael

The little church of St Dogwell in a shady corner beside the Anghof stream, tributary of the Western Cleddau, lies close to the mansion of Sealyham. St Dogfael, son of the King of Ceredigion, died in 505 having set up this church and the foundation of St Dogmaels at Llandudoch on the Teifi. A memorial stone of the 5th or 6th century in the churchyard, originally recovered from standing as a gatepost at Little Treffgarne, bears witness to the early local Christian settlements. The wall plaques on the church give an account of the Sealyham estate, linking into the career of the pirate Blackbeard and the famous breed of Sealyham Terriers. The zoomorphic carving first encountered in the capitals at Llawhaden are repeated here on capitals of the arcades which divide nave and chancel from the south side.
